"God's Room"

When people get into hard situations it is natural human instinct to find something to lean on, a shoulder to cry on, someone just to listen, or something to guide us. We as humans find many ways to satisfy this natural instinct, such as a close friend or religion. People use religion for salvation from something all the time, that is one of the things religion is supposed to do. Religion is nothing more than someones belief system, something for them to believe, and give them guidelines to live by. So of course when something goes really wrong in life they are going to turn to religion, after all of their friends have run out of things to say or advice to give. With that being said religion is a very powerful force on mankind. I know a man, and because of religion that man is still alive. His name was Frank Nappa, and this stroy takes place in 1972 when Frank was just 18 years old. Frank had had it rough growing up one of the gettos of Califorina (do not remeber wich one.) He had an acholic and absuve father and a mother who was addicted to crack and hardly around. So when Frank turned 18 he had finally had enough and was going out into the world to make something of himself. He was a recreational pot smoker by the young age of 13 and a serious one by the age of 16. He smoked ungodly amounts of pot day after day. Well when he truned 18 he moved in with his buddy/dealer Derek, right in the nick of time I might add. Derek had just gotten the ultimate hook up running out of Mexico. He would go to Mexico once every month to get anywhere from 100 to 900 lb of high grade cannibus across the borders and selling it at very low prices. Buisness was really booming and stayed steady and smooth for about 2 years. But what they didnt know is that because they were getting so much at such a high grade for so little money they had bringen apoun many enemies. Now Frank had praubally gone to church about 3 times in his life, but he said the last time he went wich was he was around 19 to go see an old friend, that he felt like there was something there, some sort of magical presence that he had never felt before. He said that he always knew God was real deep down inside but the years of hate he had towards his parents authority and just life in general, had burried that deep down. Well it was that exciting time of the month, time to make the run up to Mexico to go get the good stuff. He said the night before the run he, for some odd reason, was just thinking about God and about what kind of life style he was leading. That night he felt the spirit of God really just start to blossum in his heart and he started praying. He prayed for hours on end that night just talking about his troubles and doubts in life. Then all of the sudden out of nowhere he felt the acuatual presence of God and all his infinite beauty and power. God told him not to go on the trip with Derek tomorrow, he didnt say why he just told him not to go. After this he thought long and hard about what to do. The next day he decided to go but after this run it was over. Going into Mexico and coming out went smooth as glass as usual, but the story takes a huge plunge once they are about 3 hours away from the warehouse. Wile driving down the street a black car pulled up next to them brandishing guns telling them to pull over. They really had no choice but to pull over. Once to a stop Derek and Frank slowly get out of the van. There were about 5 people in the car but only 2 of them were brandishing their weapons. As soon as all of them got out of the car and started walking towards them Derek pulled out a pistol that he had and started shooting at the robbers. Well what they didnt know is that all 5 men had guns and as soon as they saw that gun it was an all out gun fight. Frank was the only one without a gun and he didnt even know that Derek had one with him. Derek got quite a few shots off and killed 2 of the 5 men injuring one of them. One of the robbers then shot Derek right in the head. After Derek was shot the 2 unharmed men charged at Frank first taking turns kicking him around on the ground and then both of them put a bullet in his chest. The next thing Frank remebers is waking up in the hoistbitle a week later and was wondering what was going on. Thankfully not long after Frank was gunned down someone saw him and got him to a hoistbitle quick enough to get emergency surgery done. He woke up on a wednesday and was able to leave the hoistible the following sunday. The first place he went to was church. He was convinced that he wouldnt be alive if God hadnt had great plans for his future. Sence then he has preached all across america and is currently living in China doing ministry over there. God and his religion has changed this mans life forever. God will always be there for him and his needs.

  1. That is an interesting story, Tyler. However, what I want to comment on is the very first part of this post. I agree that religion is a person's belief system, and a person's traditions and values may often be used as a crutch to see them through hard times. However, God Room is really not about religion. It is about a relationship, which is entirely different. Religion is not what turned Franklin's life around. It was relationship. Even in the story that you referenced, it was not religion that turned the man's life around. It was a relationship; a relationship that began when this man encountered the presence of the living God. In the New Testament, the Gospels show how Christ had no patience with religion. You two would have gotten along just fine! Religion was a problem them--and continues to be a problem today--that hindered people from a establishing a real relationship with the Father through His Son Jesus.

  2. Hm, interesting story. But something about your post doesn't make sense. At first, you write about how you believe religion is a comfort in times of pain, but you apparently don't believe it's anything real beyond our imaginations. Then you write a story which, one might argue, proves God's existence. Explain that to me.

  3. So do you personally know Frank or do you just know of him?

  4. Interesting post! I can hardly believe that Frank survived, but that's God for you. It does seem like God is much more to Frank than just someone to lean on when things go south, though.

  5. Hollywood, Yes I did know Frank for a short while when he was living in Tn and he is an amazing human being.
Famous Dave, I completley agree with you, God was so much more than just something to lean on in times of need to Frank.
LoVizzle, This story was the only thing I could come up with. But it does not at all prove God's existence. I was trying to get the point across that when things really got bad where was the first place he went? And deep down inside he knew he was doing wrong so maybe the guilt just ate at him so much that he told himself that he should stop, and God comes into the picture because Frank really needed to feel like he had someone to turn to in his time of need. But then again I have no clue what happened to Frank mentally, maybe it was God that talked to him and not just his guilt. Maybe it was God that saved him and not just the medical knowledge that we had at the time. I really have no clue.
Mrs P, Im sorry. Like I told LoVizzle I really didnt have another story to write about. I have had no personal experinces and this story was the closest thing I could think of.

  6. So Typo, you've said that you aren't a Christian. Do you believe that there is a god? Do you think any of the religions out there have it right, or are you an atheist? Or do you just not know?

  7. I’m not a Christian because I do not posses the faith to believe in God and all of his infinite power, and I do not get the logic of things. I mean really? This “God” of infinite power decided one day to create this pathetic little world and all of the people in it? Why? The bible leads me to believe that he created the human race so that he could have a real relationship with someone, but why would he create us to love him if so many more people are just going to spit it back in his face? I mean there are literally hundreds of thousands of religions in the world, with just as many followers. God made this world for the purpose of a loving relationship with people when he knew all along that this is what it would come to. He knew even before he started to create this world he knew that Adam and Eve would eat the apple, that he would kill all of the people in the entire world except one family by drowning them, that he would give up his “one and only son” to die one of the most horrific deaths imaginable, and for what? So that only a few number of people could get into this special club we call heaven? And if God was just this all mighty being why would he put his “one and only” son trough all of that? A life of constant agony and pain is the life that this man lead. God could have just snapped is almighty fingers and reached the same outcome. But then people tell me look at all of the miracles that Jesus did and how many people he lead to the lord. But if you need someone to bring someone back from the dead and cure blindness to believe in God then you have more faith issues than me.
To sum things up I simply do not posses the faith to believe in God. I do not believe in any other religion, or that there is a higher being. So I guess I’m an atheist.

  9. Well Tyler, I'm going to try to reply without using any of the Christian lingo, so I hope I don't come across as a goody-goody Christian.

Your question is very valid. Why did God create this pitiful world when there was a chance that we would become corrupt? Why didn't God create us with a 0% chance of us sinning? I think that's a very good question. All I can say about that is that I don't have the answer. That doesn't mean someone else doesn't, but I don't. My personal opinion is that I can't understand. I don't know why God created us in the first place. Was he bored? Did he just wanna have fun? You would think he could've done a better job, since he is perfect, right? I simply don't know. I know that I'll have eternity it heaven with him, so maybe I'll find an opportunity to ask him sometime. Although, when you get right down to it, it really doesn't matter. It's a great, great, great debate question for theologians, but I'm not a theologian.

From the information that I've gathered in the past 9 months from reading the Bible, God created the human race so he could have that relationship with those who want the relationship with him. When a person has been growing vibrantly in his faith for several months and he has grown close to Jesus, the relationship is beautiful. One year ago, I wasn't living like a real Christian. I was just into the game of life. Over the summer, I changed my priorities from ME to GOD. When you look at where I am now to where I was a year ago, the change is drastic. For people who've known me well in the past year, like my parents or the Powells, I'm sure they've noticed a change in me. In the past month alone, I've been praying a whole lot more, and there's already a huge difference in me. Have you ever had that spiritual high you might get at a long worship service or at a camp one night? I'm getting that about every other day. It's just awesome! I really can't explain it, other than I've simply grown closer to God. I still have questions and I still have doubts, but I don't let those get between me and God. If you go through life looking for something to complain about, you will always find it. I really don't want to spend my whole life complaining when I could be living in Jesus.

  10. (resume reading...)

Did you know that in every breath, God experiences more pain that any human ever has in his whole lifetime? The relationship that God has with the select few Christians is worth the pain that he suffers from the rest of the human race that rejects him. Now I also have to point out that he doesn't condemn anyone to hell except Satan and his demons. He has given every single human on earth the opportunity to go to heaven instead hell. I know that from your line of sight, you can't believe that. You probably think since God knows only a few people will take God up on his offer, he is essentially condemning everyone else to hell. But it all comes down to free will. If we don't have free will, yes we would never sin, but we would be robots. Tell me Tyler, would you rather marry a woman after you two have grown together in love, or would you rather marry a female robot whom you assembled and programmed to love you? I personally would rather marry a living being instead of a robot. Sure, the robot can't mess up. She can't offend me, she can't argue with me, she won't hurt my feelings, she can't annoy me during a football game. But that's because her "love" is artificial. It's all lights and clockwork. Nothing more. It's in her programming, which I created. The woman, however, will annoy me during a football game, she will offend me, she will argue with me, she will hurt my feelings. But her love is real. She has chosen to love me. She picked me over every other guy on this planet, and that makes me feel special, loved, important, and amazing! That's the way it is with God. God gave us free will so he could develop a loving relationship that was real. It's why he didn't create a robotic race, because it's be predictable and boring and nothing special. He would force us into it. What kind of God is that, to force us into a relationship? See, a REAL God would give us free will. Even though most everyone will reject him, he will have that one woman (Christians) who loves him. The love that he and the woman share is worth the pain of rejection.

We as humans really can't understand everything that God has done. I don't know what happens to babies who die, I don't know what happens to those who never hear about Jesus and die, I don't know this and I don't know that. The good news is that God doesn't require me to. If I had to figure all that stuff out in order to get into heaven, I think I'd just forget about it. It'd be too hard. But thankfully, God has made it as easy as saying "Jesus, I'm yours. Forgive me of my sins and take me in as one of your children." The only "catch" is that you have to live completely for God. You gotta leave your life of sin and live in Jesus. Does that mean you can't sin? Of course not. You're guaranteed to sin. That's a fact. But God has created a way out of hell. You can take it or leave it. It's that simple. God desires a relationship with each and every one of us. Even you, Tyler.
